Follow the First Lady, force your family to quit Smoking

Hats off to Michelle Obama. She dethroned Barack Obama from my top favorite spot!

Michelle has shown the way.  She has forced the most powerful man on the planet, the President of the United States, to kick the habit. He HAD to stop smoking as disclosed recently as he is ‘scared of his wife’.  He did so as he could not face his kids and tell them not to do something he himself is still doing.

Ladies, just follow the first lady.

Kids make sure your parents quit smoking for YOUR good.

I know that most of you do not even see the gruesome ads by the government.  We don’t bother about the health hazard warning. “ That won’t happen to us” … till it hits you hard.

A close friend of mine who I meet in the elevator every other day at work, came to me and said “Doctor, can you have a look at these reports?” I looked at the reports which clearly showed that it was a case of Lung cancer and I asked,  “Whose reports are these?”.

I was shocked when he said “Mine”.

“I cannot believe it. You have no habits!”

He was looking perfectly normal, vegetarian and teetotaller but the only factor was smoking.  He was a heavy smoker for the last 30 years.  I got a biopsy done that confirmed advanced Lung Cancer.

Life for him and his family turned upside down.  Kids studying and working in the States had to come back.  Suddenly his industry had to be looked after by someone.  His wife who used to just manage the house had to think of her and her children’s future.  It was a big shock. I don’t  wish anyone to be in such a position.

DO NOT ALLOW your husbands or children to smoke.

Just boycott them and they jolly well stop smoking.

We do not need any further scientific evidence that tobacco has killed more people than even the World War.  Many people in their prime have succumbed to lung cancer and cardiac disease.

All the patients ask me one question.  What causes Cancer?  After all these years of research there is one cause that we know and that is ‘tobacco’.

‘Why take the risk?’  Just stop smoking, if not for your sake, at least for the sake of your children, for the sake of your wife, they have not done anything wrong.

Alarmingly, I see more women smoking and I wonder who can make them stop.

Brace yourself for the horrific facts from the West where more and more women started smoking from 1960s.

Sir Richard Peto, an eminent Cancer Epidemiologist published an important article in Lancet in Jan 2013 .  ‘The 21st century hazards of smoking and benefits of stopping: a prospective study of one million women in the UK.

  • Mortality is tripled in smokers
  • Smokers lose at least 10 years of lifespan.
  • Although the hazards of smoking until age 40 years and then stopping are substantial, the hazards of continuing are ten times greater.
  • Stopping well before age 40 years avoids more than 90% of the excess mortality caused by continuing smoking.
  • Stopping before age 30 years avoids more than 97% of it.

Women are repeating same mistake that men have committed over so many decades.

It’s never too late to stop for anyone – Gent or Lady

For your sake, your children’s sake STOP SMOKING!!
